Whether it starts for you early on the weekend of Memorial Day or you’re waiting for the solstice in June, the coming summer is something many of us look forward to all year round.
Beach holidays. Pool time. Swimming machines and ice cream. Long days, brief nights, sunshine, hot weather, holidays at college. Is it any surprise that we feel pleased and carefree during the summer months?
Summer is not just an interesting time of year, researchers have shown it is useful for our health as well. Vitamin D is synthesized by sunlight and during the summer is more abundant in our bodies. In preventing osteoporosis, certain cancers, and other chronic diseases, vitamin D plays a protective function.
Ultraviolet light also transforms cholesterol into vitamin D, reducing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes. Our tendency to drink more water and a diet rich in fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables also implies that in the summer months many of us have a healthier diet.
Although the risk of skin cancer from the sun’s rays can’t be ignored–that’s why you should always wear sunscreen when subjected to the sun.
Dermatologists have discovered that controlled exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun can in fact have a therapeutic effect on skin complaints such as acne, psoriasis and dermatitis.
But that’s not everything! By expanding our blood vessels, warm weather has a beneficial effect on our circulatory system.
During the summer months, migraine sufferers also feel better
Canadian physicians investigating the connection between weather and migraines have found that the amount of assaults is reduced by clear, sunny and dry weather. That’s because reduced barometric (air) pressure causes more serotonin to be produced, which keeps migraines at bay.
